2016 recap

2016 was—without question—one of the toughest year of my life, but there were some good moments.

I traveled to some AMAZING places I hadn’t been before–Boston, Charleston, & Savannah. I went to Boston for a job interview and saw most of the city. I got to drink my favorite beer—Yuengling—at Fenway park.

I ran a few races, beginning with a 5k in March. Wow, March feels like years ago. I am worlds away from where I was in life in March. I PR’d in the 5k, with a time of 26:57.

In June I ran the SJ Giants 5 mile. I didn’t beat my PR of 44 this year. I won’t do this race next year. The race is becoming a bit too baseball themed for me, and less focused on running. They had so few running pictures this year and I was looking forward to seeing my pics, but they instead took tons of pictures of runners with the trophies. There are so many other races to run so I won’t feel like I’m missing out.

I ran a strong race at the RAD 80s 5k in San Jose. I ran in it in 30 mins due to a long break I took in the middle at the water station. The race was in extreme heat and started after 9. I would definitely do this race again.

Lastly, in November I completed my half-marathon in Savannah, GA. First, my friend and I went to Charleston for a few days and then ubered to Savannah.

Here’s us walking around Charleston. You think it was humid?

Charleston has way different cake mixes! I’ve never seen apple cider cupcakes or salted caramel back home.

Next time I would like to go straight to Savannah. There is so much to see there. Bonus: you can drink on the street. I wasn’t aware of this until I was offered a to-go cup. That’s a plus.

I worked all year training for this run but my knee gave me trouble towards the end. I really like that the course covered all different neighborhoods, from the projects to mansion-land. Neighbors were warm and friendly. I wore my medal around all day and many people congratulated us.

Some neighbors handed out small cups of beer and the race had a small-town Southern feel, which I love. I heard a woman holler, “y’all come back now, ya hear?” I’ve loved the South ever since I went to Georgia two years ago for the 4th of July. The 4th is my favorite holiday.

Look at how adorable Savannah looks from across the river. We had to take a ferry to the race expo. So fun. 🙂

This was my first Rock n Roll race and it lived up to the reputation. The shirt is nice, and the course support made it more fun. I loved the bands!!

Just when I was thinking about water there was a water and/or gatorade stop. I was surprised how nice a little sugar felt in my stomach. The medal is great too, and functions as a beer opener. The race was very well organized, but the chocolate milk at the end was nonfat. What’s up with that?  I still drank it though to get my blood sugar up. The race ended in Forsyth park. It’s so beautiful!

I was pretty worn out after the half. My feet felt larger than usual and I felt like I needed a reset. I took some time to rest and now I’m back on my feet again and working out more that I’ve been.

This was a tough year, but I learned a lot, and have experienced more career growth than I ever expected. I read more and did more career research and know my trade better than ever.

Best fictional books I read:

In a Dark, Dark Wood. Luckiest Girl Alive. I highly recommend these too.

I read several others this year and I’m currently reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

I cannot wait until I receive my copy of Aubrey Huff’s book. I’m so grateful he shared his experience about his anxiety and depression. He is creating awesome art work too.

Although there were good moments and a lot learned, I’m looking forward to this year to be over.

Running goals for 2017:

  • 54 min 10k
  • A half marathon without walking. I hope to run Savannah again next year, but I don’t know where I’ll be in life. I hope to gradually get up to a half marathon, in 11 months. But I will see how my running goes. I want to first reach my 10k goal of 54. I almost signed up for another Rock n Roll run when they had the big sale a few weeks back, but I want to be sure I can run the whole thing. I will do all I can to run strong and healthy in 2017 and PR in the 10k.

I registered for a Valentine’s 10k in February. If I finish in 56 mins I’ll be thrilled. I know I can do it if I stay consistent with running. These days I’m running every other day and my body seems very happy with that. I haven’t had knee pain recently, woohoo!

Other plans for 2017:

My resolution is to practice more yoga. Yoga with Adriene is working well for me. I’ve never liked yoga videos that much but Adriene has so many different videos. It’s a real struggle for me to get to the club when I’m so busy all the time. It’s a lot easier to do yoga at home. This is working for me so I plan to keep it up. I modify my videos. Sometimes instead of chattaranga I just hold plank. Whatever works for me.

I don’t plan to do any 5ks in 2017. I have reached my PR and plan to work more on strength and endurance at longer distances rather than extreme speed at the 5k. My 10k is in 6 weeks and I would like to be able to work on my running around 9 min miles without knee pain and running at a very steady pace.

How was your year?

Any resolutions?

  2. What a fun year! Travel is such a luxury. I would like to do more of that in 2017! And like you, I need to get back into yoga. Are you following a specific exercise plan or program? I’d love to see it!

  3. Congratulations Emma!!!

Dan from OPTM. I was thinking about you and wondered how you did. I’m glad to see you were able to finish your first half! We knew you had it in you and I’m glad you were able to do it. Again rock n roll is the best one to start off with as there is always a ton of support.

Wishing you the best in all your goals in 2017!!
